How to Select Your Foundation Color

Finally, the mystery of selecting the correct foundation color is unlocked! In selecting the correct foundation color for your skin, you must know two things:

  1. What is your skin’s undertone?
  2. What is your skin’s surface tone?

First, what is the difference between undertone and surface tone? Your undertone, never changes. It is the natural tone of skin you are born with – cool or warm.

In contrast, your surface tone will vary throughout the year and throughout your life depending upon sun exposure and age. It will also vary based on skin conditions such as redness, acne or hyper-pigmentation.

How can you identify your skin’s undertone:

  1. There are only two primary skin undertones: cool and warm.
  2. 97% of the world’s population are warm undertones.
  3. This leaves only 3% with cool undertones.

The chart at the bottom of this page will help in identifying your skin’s tone. Start by selecting your undertone group. Next, select your surface tone from within the undertone group you have already identified.

A few last tips to help in selecting your undertone group:

  • golden = warm - yellow or olive undertone (fair to medium complexions)
  • honey = warm - yellow or olive undertone (medium to deep complexions)
  • natural= neutral - peach or yellow undertone (fair to medium complexions)
